What Is ‘REAL’ Yoga?

With yoga being an ancient practice that has been taught and carried down through generations, and more recently adapted to western culture, it is no surprise that the term ‘yoga’ causes some confusion and even some controversy.

Originally developed in India over 5000 years ago, the practice has previously been defined as a Hindu spiritual discipline. Through methods of breath control, meditation and Asanas (postures and movements), traditional yogis aim to work towards health for the body and mind. This is a very general definition, and one that starts to explain why yoga has become such a phenomenon in the modern western world.

Besides this one theory, there are also so many TYPES of yoga – and it seems that new variations are being developed every day! Ashtanga, Yin, Acro, Vinyasa, Hatha, Hot Yoga, Bikram, Arial – it can be overwhelming, and this starts to explain why there is so much controversy surrounding the question – ‘what is REAL yoga?’

Our personal answer to this question is quite simple – ‘YOU TELL US.’ We are passionate about yoga because of what it has done for our own lives as well as the lives of others. We believe that meditation, breath control and movement are all keys to a healthy life, and that if people find a way to do this in a way that they can ENJOY – then that can never be a bad thing!

Even though there are so many different styles of yoga, we believe that all yoga has a core intent – to create mindfulness, calmness and balance through the mind and the body. While we are hot yoga lovers, this doesn’t mean that we are against other types of yoga. What might work for one person may not work for another. We are just happy to see that yoga has become so readily available within our community, and this is what we aim to contribute to.

At Peak Physique Hot Yoga, we help students to discover themselves on new emotional and physical levels. We incorporate breathing techniques, meditation and Asanas (like the traditional definition outlines) and pride ourselves on our modern, fresh approach. Yet, we have still heard some interesting comments about Peak Physique Hot Yoga teachers not teaching ‘real yoga’ or not fitting into a certain mould. We appreciate that everyone has their own opinion on the topic of yoga, and encourage people to do what works for them. We are happy with the vibes and approach found at Peak Physique Hot Yoga and we wear the label ‘modern yoga’ with pride! Traditionally, it was only men who were allowed to practice ‘real yoga,’ so, to be honest, we are glad that times have changed… and the definition of yoga along with it!

In our opinion, yoga can be bought into your everyday life (and not just in the form of physical practice). Just by becoming more mindful, giving, being kind, and working on self-fulfilment is the practice of yoga! It doesn’t matter what type, form or style of yoga you do – as long as it is working for you. Any yoga is good yoga and we are supportive of anyone who makes it a part of their daily lives – just like we have!

    Gia:

Yoga is a union between mind and a body. Self awareness and alignment of your spirit with your higher consciousness is the core objective of any yoga practice. Doesn’t matter which practice you are attracted or like to do- Bikram, Vinyasa, Bhakti, Tantra, Kundalini or Jhana.

Great response, Gia 🙂 We couldn’t agree more and encourage people to try as many different types of yoga as possible!
