‘This week I am going to be so healthy.’
‘I will start my diet on Monday.’
‘I want to lose weight for that holiday I have coming up.’
Do any of these phrases sound familiar to you? Of course they do! At some point, you would have heard yourself or someone else utter words like these- but did they have any effect?
In today’s fast-paced world, people are finding it harder and harder to live a healthy lifestyle that suits them. With careers, kids, responsibilities and social commitments often taking over our days, it can be difficult to eat healthy, keep fit and maintain our mental health- difficult, but not impossible! The above phrases imply that we have a time limit to reach our goals, and place a heavy emphasis on this factor. While this can be a great concept for motivation, it isn’t always sustainable- especially if you are going to intensely stick to your aims and then give up once you have reached them!
The ancient Indian text, Bhagavad Gita, teaches us to make a decision moving from unconscious to conscious, and to eliminate the things we don’t want, replacing them with things we do want. In simpler terms, this means making the right decisions that benefit us as a whole, rather than decisions that may serve us temporarily, but do not sustain our overall goal.
We are advocates for a healthy lifestyle- including a healthy diet, fitness and a happy mind (and Hot Yoga, of course!). We are also two of the BUSIEST people you will ever meet! For us, being this way is a consistent lifestyle choice, rather than a short-term aim. By making certain changes and choices, we allow our healthy lifestyle to be our main priority, despite our busy schedules. We have so little time and almost no time to practice hot yoga- but instead of using it as an excuse, we decided to build a hot yoga studio in our house! Talk about healthy lifestyle dedication!
Sometimes people tell us that we make it look easy- but in reality, it actually is (and don’t worry, you don’t have to install a hot yoga room in your house to achieve it!)
At Peak Physique Hot Yoga, we encourage people to choose healthy habits, rather than intense and unsustainable health goals. Here are some little tips and tricks we incorporate into our lifestyle- use them wisely to start seeing results…and then continue to see them!
Plan out your days in terms of what you’re going to eat, what exercise you are going to do and how you are going to be mindful. Especially in regard to healthy food choices, planning is essential in staying on track.
Enjoy your food. Enjoy your exercise. Enjoy your down time. If you don’t enjoy something- why are you doing it? Chances are, you wont stick to it. Find what works for you and then have fun with it- life is there to enjoy!
This doesn’t have to mean anything intense. Walking the dog, cleaning your house, walking to the shop instead of driving- these are all movements that will help to lift our mood and incorporate some sneaky exercise into our regimes!
Use mindfulness to stay focused
We are often so busy and distracted that we are rarely present in our own lives. Considering this, it is no wonder we reach for that unhealthy breakfast-to-go on the drive to work, or mindlessly eat a bag of chips while watching TV. Taking a few minutes out of each day to quiet your mind, refocus and reflect will do wonders for you in regards to your physical and mental health. You will find your mind less cluttered, your motivation levels up and your choices clear. (Hint, hint: yoga is the perfect way to practice your mindfulness!)
Don’t be too strict
This often applies when we are exercising one of the quotes at the start of this post. This is because when we set time limits on a healthy lifestyle, we are often too strict with ourselves and then totally let go once the goal has passed. Life is here to enjoy- so as long as you are consistent in your healthy lifestyle choices, it is important not to beat yourself up over little indulgences. Balance is the key word here, and again- yoga can always help with this!
So there you have it- some very simple and easy tips for living a healthy lifestyle, rather than making it a short-term aim. None of these tips are hard or unattainable, and in fact, they help to make your healthy lifestyle a consistent and sustainable one. So… NO EXCUSES! ☺
