If you’re a part of any yoga community, you will hear the word ‘Ayurveda’ around the studio from time to time. This is because yoga is traditionally an Ayurvedic practice. Ayurveda is a style of living and healing that originated in ancient India. It promotes the knowledge of living and healing by natural principles and methods, aiming for longevity and healthy living. Obviously, yoga fits perfectly into this definition, and the practice can be a real saviour when it comes to fighting off winter nasties. There are lots of other Ayurvedic traditions that can also help with this – here are the ones that best fit in with a modern lifestyle:
Eat Simple Foods
Easy digestion is really important when aiming to keep the immune system up. If the body is working too hard to digest something, it can’t put as much effort and energy into preventing sickness. A healthy digestive system will help to detoxify the body, so avoid meat, diary products, sugar and processed food when aiming to keep your defences up. Herbs and spices – not pills and vitamins
Ayurvedic teachings promote natural remedies for illness, such as herbs and spices. Including more of these in your meals is a great way to start, and you can often use them as natural alternatives to medicine. For example, turmeric and salt can be used as a sore throat gargle, and hot chilies will help to fight off flus! So spice it up!

Tea, tea and More Tea
We have talked about the benefits of tea in our previous posts, and winter is the time to really bust out those teapots! Different teas offer different medicinal properties – read about some of them here!
When you feel the sniffles coming on, instead of admitting defeat and heading for the cold and flu tablets, have a sip and a sniff of this medicinal all-natural brew!
PPHY Ayurvedic Tea for Colds
1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger
1 teaspoon grated fresh turmeric
1 tablespoon dried hibiscus flowers (you can usually get these from health food stores)
1 teaspoon honey
Put all ingredients into a teapot and fill with boiling water.
Allow to steep for 10-15 minutes, or 20 minutes for an extra strong brew.
When drinking, inhale the steam before sipping to get maximum medicinal properties!
